Tips For Filtering Your Feed

Last semester in my Writing 150 class, we were assigned to write an opinion editorial, and I decided to write mine about confidence in conjunction to social media. Now, most people when they hear confidence and social media automatically think of a negative connotation. In my paper, I decided to take the other side, and argue that social media, if used correctly, could in fact increase confidence. Hard paper to write. There was little to no scientific research done, and my professor had a strong opinion on the topic arguing against my topic. I did alright on the paper and good a decent score, but I wanted to present the topic to you. In this post, I want to share some tips to filter your feed to create a self-esteem boosting profile.

Do you think social media has the potential to boost confidence? I would love to hear your opinions so email me at blackal.blog@gmail.com and let me know your opinions.
1. Unfollow Negativity
If you have a lot of followers, this might be kind of hard for you to do. Unfollowing generally means you will also lose followers, but trust me when I say that this creates a world of a difference. Unfollow accounts that make you "wish you were them" or "are following just because they follow me". Following accounts that do not spread positivity will only decrease your confidence.
Unfollow that person who you only followed in high school because they were "popular" or that model or Youtuber that makes you want to have their life instead of your own. Remember, you can always check up on them later, but removing them from your DAILY feed will remove those thoughts of jealously and negativity and help you focus on yourself more.
2. Follow Positivity
Goes hand in hand with the previous tip. Only follow the people who make you feel good. For my Instagram, I follow people who inspire me, motivate me, people I want to keep in touch with, people who are my real world friends. I know people who follow fitness accounts because they get motivated by them while I also know people who don't follow those accounts because it makes them feel bad about their bodies.
It all depends on you. Maybe a scripture or quote daily account motivates you, or a fashion blogger who inspires you to have some more fun with your clothes. Be aware of what makes you happy and follow accounts that spread those same values.
3. Just Post It
Ever have a picture that you really wanted to post but then decided against it for some reason? Well, go back to that picture, and I dare you to post it, turn off your phone, and wait. Too many expectations for social media posts have affected my confidence before, but I have more recently just decided to post whatever I want to. I talked about it in my last blog post, but sometimes, you just gotta be that person and go for it. If I want to post a picture because I like it, then I am going to. I don't care about how many likes or comments it gets, I post it cause I want to. Post what makes you feel confident. I read a quote once that said "your vibe attracts your tribe" and I think it is true. If you are confident, people will be able to feel that confidence and gravitate towards it.
Confidence is a really big topic that I am really passionate about and I plan on talking a lot about it in the future. I hope that this short post was enough for you to reevaluate your social media and take into consideration what you're "feeding" your mind each day with your feeds. Feed your mind with good things just like you would your body. Remember to email me with your thoughts and I hope to read some soon!
